Club Volunteer Conference 2018

The annual Club Volunteer Conference will take place in 2018 between April 20-22nd, at Glenmore Lodge. 

This highlight in the calendar is an action packed weekend to support club members from across Scotland. We have workshops suitable for complete beginners, aspiring coaches, club officials and committee members. Previous events have attracted around 100 volunteers from clubs throughout Scotland. 

The main conference takes place all day Saturday and Sunday with a range of workshops. There is also an optional dinner at 6pm on Friday, followed by workshops on Friday evening. 

As this is a subsidised event to support SCA Affiliated Clubs all delegates must be SCA Individual Members and a member of an SCA Affiliated Club. The SCA is very grateful to all the volunteers involved in delivering the event.

Location

Glenmore Lodge The sportscotland National Centre in the heart of the Cairngorm’s is again partnering us in delivering this event. Use of their equipment, excellent facilities and helpful staff are reasons enough to go back year after year! 

Cost

Residential (includes B&B on Friday and Saturday nights, packed lunch on both days, Saturday night dinner, refreshments, cake, t-shirt): £125.00 until 31/01/2018, £140.00 after. - SOLD OUT. Any beds that do become available will be advertised and will be sold on a first come first served basis. 

Non-residential (includes lunch both days, refreshments, cake, t-shirt): £75.00 until 31/01/2018, £85.00 after.

Day Delegate (includes lunch on your chosen day, refreshments, cake, t-shirt): £40.00 until 31/01/2018, £45.00 after.

Friday night dinner is an optional extra available to all and dinner is availalbe to non-residential participants on Saturday night (£15.00 extra per meal).

Workshops

We have many different workshops to choose from so there is something for everyone! Take a look at the full workshop descriptions below. Registration is from 5pm on the Friday, followed by dinner (optional) and workshops. On Saturday early evening there are a number of drop in sessions that are avialable for you to attend, no need to book. There are options for a full weekend, full day or half day workshops on both Saturday and Sunday.

Entry can be made online here or via the SCA Portal. Spaces are limited and available on a first come, first served basis. When booking you must click one of the package tickets at the top and then when choosing the workshops: 

If you are selecting a Morning workshop then please pick an Afternoon workshop that is running on same day

If you are selecting an All Day workshop Do Not select another workshop that is running on the same day. 

If you are wanting to complete one of the All Weekend workshops. Select a Friday night workshop (if you are wanting to go to one), then select the all weekend workshop Only

Friday Evening Workshops

Safeguarding Training - Essential training for individuals on how to create and sustain a fun, safe paddling environment for the safety of everyone.
 
Event Safety - A British Canoeing / SCA workshop looking at the areas to run safe and effective events.
 
Coaching The Mind - Foundation module covering key aspects of mental skills training. Covering the psychological aspects of paddling will help you understand how to improve yours or others performance through mental skills training.
 
Coaching Young Paddlers - Foundation module looking at issues when coaching young paddlers. What do we need to know and how to ensure that the sessions meet the needs of young paddlers.
 
Swimming Pool - Foundation module - This module aims to offer practical advice and guidance for gaining access to swimming pools, and for getting the most out of pool sessions. It is designed to equip coaches with a good working knowledge of paddlesport activities taking place within a swimming pool environment.
 
Paddleability - Foundation module looking at helping coaches be more inclusive when introducing paddlesports.
 
Strength & Condition for Paddlers - An opportunity to look at ways that you can prepare you and / or your paddlers for paddlesport. A practical workshop that will cover key physiological principles to allow you to look after and ultimately prepare yourself for paddling.
 
Mentoring - Foundation module – The module intends to equip coaches with a definition of modern mentoring. Identifying its principles, elements of best practice and the vocabulary which current mentor education embraces.
 
Rolling Improvement - An evening spent looking at improving your roll. Whether you can roll every time or have a shaky 50/50 roll then let’s look at some common faults and ways to rid them from your performance. - Fully Booked

All Weekend Workshops

3 * OC - This is a 2 day course, all Saturday and Sunday, aiming to cover the 3 star canoe syllabus. There is no requirement to get assessed, but is an option over the 2 days. Our trainers will work with you developing your knowledge, understanding and performance in the canoe against the 3 star syllabus. This would be perfect for those that need time in a canoe to consolidate and develop their performance at this level.
 
3 * Sea Kayak - This is a 2 day course, all Saturday and Sunday, aiming to cover the 3 star sea kayak syllabus. There is no requirement to get assessed, but is an option over the 2 days. Our trainers will work with you developing your knowledge, understanding and performance in sea kayak against the 3 star syllabus. This would be perfect for those that need time in a kayak to consolidate and develop their performance at this level.

Saturday Full Day Workshops

Improver WWK - This is a workshop for grade 2 white water kayakers looking to move onto grade 3. Those who are nervous on grade 3 and would like some help would also get a lot from this workshop. 
 
Sea Kayak Rough Water Control - This is a workshop for sea kayakers who need help in the rough stuff. If you paddle at 3 star standard (no requirement to hold the award) then let us take you onto rougher water and help you with your sea reading, boat handling and tactics for when the sea is doing its best to push you about.
 
Improver Sea Kayak - This is a workshop that will cover essential skills for taking more responsibility during a paddle. From planning the day, running the logistics and then on water skills such as manoeuvring, positioning as well as general paddling skills. 
 
Improver Canoe - River skills - If you have some canoe skills but would like to get more control on the river then here you are – your perfect masterclass to help you master your craft! Spending time as a solo paddler on grade 1/2 water where river skills such as crossing currents, precision lines, accuracy and of course understanding of trim will all be on the agenda.
 
Traditional Canoe Skills - Beyond the paddle! Time to embrace sails, ropes and poles as a means to keep the journey going. Using both open water and river this will look at how you go between these traditional canoe skills.
 
Womens WWK Development - An all women day on the river. Looking at developing control and finesse in your paddling so you can style the lines with ease and confidence. You should be at 3 star standard (no need to hold the award) to take part in this workshop.
 
Improver SUP - Plenty of paddlers have been getting into SUP. Now here is your chance to have a day with a coach developing control, power and finesse in your paddling. The day will also cover essential skills of dealing with common incidents.
 
Getting into Surf Kayaking -  Here you go – surfs up! Get to the beach and learn how to catch those waves. 
 

Saturday Morning Workshops

Feedback & Coaching Behaviours - A half day workshop for coaches that covers the critical area of feedback. Different types of coaching delivery can lead to the need for different types of feedback. This workshop will look at the different types of feedback and create links between the differing coaching behaviours used and the feedback mechanisms to aid the paddlers in their development.
 
How to Coach Rolling - This workshop is aimed at those who coach or aid others with their roll. We will look at building up progressions, practices and exercises that can help you to help others.
 
Strength & Conditioning for Paddlesport - A workshop to look at how we can prepare ourselves better for paddlesports. No previous experience in this area is required.
 
Open Water Rescues - A workshop to take your rescues out into open water. This is a practical workshop that aims to look at simple and effective ways to deal with paddling incidents in the open water. Suitable for all craft and for those that are 2 star standard and above.
 
Coaching Rescues - All paddlers should be able to deal with simple paddling scenarios. If you are coaching others or helping others in how to do rescues then this workshop aims to look at ways to help with the progressions for coaching rescues.
 
Kayak - Forward Paddling Clinic - Forward paddling is the most essential of skills. This workshop is aimed at improving our technique. We will spend time out on the loch improving our understanding and practices to drive the kayak further for longer. Suitable for any kayak and paddlers of all levels.

Saturday Afternoon Workshops

Improver Rolling - Got a roll that needs refinement? Then here you go the workshop that aims to help you get to the next level. 
 
Games Sense - A workshop aimed at how we can use games to aid us in improving our performance for when it matters. Learn about the theory then put it into practice. Suitable for all crafts and all paddlers.
 
Putting the Fundamentals into Action - Suitable for all paddlers and all craft. This half-day workshop will take place out on the loch and aims to help  you put the fundamentals into your paddling. We will cover critical areas of balance – using good posture and connectivity, agility – using posture, power transfer and connectivity, coordination – using posture and connectivity. These along with the ability to feel and work with the water will get you control and mastering your craft.
 
Stroke Work for Canoeists - What’s in a name – Indian stroke, J stroke, Knifed J, Box stroke, Pitch stroke! Let us help! Develop an deeper understanding of the strokes and learn how they how work so that you can add more options for moving your canoe. Whether you are tandem or solo this is for you. Suitable for those that have done some canoeing and above.

Its All About Structure - How do you structure your paddling practice time? This workshop aims to give you plenty of options. Whether you are a coach or not this one is for you. Suitable for all craft. This workshop will cover a bit of theory but aims to give you a way to practice that aids your development.

Sea Kayak Sailing - A look at sea kayak sailing systems and how to set your sea kayak up.
 
Kayak Welding - Where to start / Kit required - give it a go on a kayak - we will supply kayak!
 
Canoe Outfitting - Look at how to set up your canoe and why!
 
OC1 Rolling - Time in the pool giving an OC1 a go at rolling!
 
Weather - An opportunity to discuss some weather options / where to source / apps / interpretation.
 
Sea Navigation - A look at the resources required and how to use them.

Sunday Full Day Workshops

Leading WWK Trips - This workshop is for those that are 3 star standard and above (there is no need to hold the award). It sets out to help look at critical leadership skills to help have successful trips. Everyone can be a leader, if you have some knowledge of how then you can be more useful for the trips that you are taking. Reading the environment, tactics for running the river, communication strategies and positioning will all be covered.
 
Leading Sea Kayak Trips - This workshop is for those that are 3 star standard and above (there is no need to hold the award). It sets out to help look at critical leadership skills to help have successful trips. Everyone can be a leader, if you have some knowledge of how then you can be more useful for the trips that you are taking. Reading the environment, tactics for journeying, communication strategies and positioning will all be covered.
 
Leading Canoe Trips - This workshop is for those that are 3 star standard and above (there is no need to hold the award). It sets out to help look at critical leadership skills to help have successful trips. Everyone can be a leader, if you have some knowledge of how then you can be more useful for the trips that you are taking. Reading the environment, tactics for running the river, tactics for dealing with wind, communication strategies and positioning will all be covered.
 
Practical White Water Rescues - If you spend any time on white water then come and look at some top tips and handy hints for dealing with simple, common scenarios. Regardless if you have done the WWS&R or not, regardless of canoe or kayak then this one day workshop is for you.
 
Sea Kayak - Personal Safety Skills - This one day workshop out on the sea aims to look at critical personal safety. What to carry, where to carry it along with the means to look after yourself. Rolling, getting back in / on your kayak and self-rescues will all be part of the day.
 
Sea Kayak Sailing - A day looking at how to use sails while on a journey. This will cover how to set it up as well learning how to sail.
 
Traditional Canoe Skills - Beyond the paddle! Time to embrace sails, ropes and poles as a means to keep the journey going. Using both open water and river this will look at how you go between these traditional canoe skills.
 
Surf Kayak Development - Done some surf kayaking before? Here you go – an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the surf zone. Reading the environment, tactics for catching and riding the waves along with managing the environment will all be covered.

 

Sunday Morning Workshops

Developing Your Canoe Coaching - A half day workshop for canoe coaches that could do with more ideas to add to their tool box.
 
Beyond FSRT - Done your FSRT? Then here is a workshop that aims to recap and then build on those skills. This workshop can / will be tailored to individual needs. Suitable for 2 star paddlers (not required to hold the award) and beyond and is desirable (not essential) if paddlers have completed the FSRT.
 
Fundamentals of Movement - Foundation module – this module is all about understanding the 3 concepts that underpin the Fundamentals of Movement in Paddlesport (Balance, Coordination and Agility). Suitable for all craft.
 
Rolling Progressions - Struggling with your roll? Or do you have to help others who are struggling. Let us help with variety of tasks and games that will aid in progressing the roll.
 
Games Sense - A workshop aimed at how we can use games to aid us in improving our performance for when it matters. Learn about the theory then put it into practice. Suitable for all crafts and all paddlers.
 
Introduction to SUP - A half-day workshop to introduce you to the delights of Stand Up Paddling. This is suitable for all!

Developing Your Kayak Coaching - A half day workshop for kayak coaches that could do with more ideas to add to their tool box.
 
Fundamentals of Paddlesport - Foundation module – this module aims to introduce and develop coaches understanding of what adds to quality to paddlers performance, observation skills and practices that can be used to develop performance.
 
Improver SUP - Done SUP before? Then this is for you. This half day workshop will help with developing power and control on the board.
 
Rolling Games - Rolling is fun. Let us show games that we can play. These may just seem to be silly fun but you will see how they can develop a strong reliable roll in no time at all. Suitable for all, although if you have a roll (however shaky) or are coaching rolling you will get more from it.
