National Go Canoeing Week 2018

National Go Canoeing Week
Date:
26/05/2018 to 03/06/2018

The theme this year is the Big Adventure - time to get thinking about an epic adventure on your bucket list to tie in with this national campaign!

The aim of National Go Canoeing Week is to get as many people out on the water as possible, and promote canoeing/kayaking and paddlesports nationally. This year, the theme is ‘The Big Adventure’ which is a great opportunity to showcase Scotland as the UK’s real adventure playground. And it’s an opportunity for you to be a part of The Big Adventure by going on your own adventures during the week.

The website is www.gocanoeingweek.org.uk, where you can find more details, and there are prizes to be won for entering details of your own adventures. The campaign is supporting Cancer Research, which will help to elevate the visibility of the campaign, whilst also raising money for a great charity.

Ideas from BC about how to get involved:

Weekend Adventure
Get away for the weekend and discover fantastic places to paddle across the UK. Spend the weekend in a cosy B&B, visit friends or give canoe camping a go!

Club Together
National Go Canoeing Week is a great excuse for a fun club event. Organise a paddling weekend away, an open day to encourage new members,a fun activity day or a social evening. Don’t forget there is a prize up for grabs for the most club miles paddled, so encourage your members to venture out for your club sessions this week. Get the date in your club diary now and plan a fantastic start to the summer!

Train Up For A Challenge Route
No matter what your level of paddling ability, anyone can train up to take on our Challenge Routes during the week.

There are currently four challenge routes live on our Challenge Pages. You could take on our newest route, The Trent Loop, only paddled by a handful of challengers so far.

Each challenge route has its own beauty and toughness; which will you choose?

Trail Bagging
With over 100 canoe trails now live on the British Canoeing site why not give Trail Bagging a go?
Look for trails in your local area and see how many you can bag during National Go Canoeing Week.

Come to an Event!
There will be a wide range of events taking place, nationwide, throughout National Go Canoeing Week. From group paddles to full weekends of paddling fun.

Events can give you the chance to gain new skills, meet fellow paddlers and try out different gear and equipment.

Edinburgh Kayak Club - Trip

Activity: A journey of 4 miles on the Union Canal in Edinburgh. We will start the journey at the footbridge near Craiglochart Road North, EH14 1BR, and paddle 2 miles along the canal to Lochrin Basin where we stop for a quick refreshment at Badabing Bar and Grill, 2 Fountainbridge Square, EH3 9QB. We will then paddle 2 miles back to our starting point. There is a short walk (with your boat) from Craiglochart Road North to the get in point on the canal and one short portage around a bridge on the approach to Lochrin Basin. There may be other water users that we will need to avoid. Some instruction can be provided for beginners but this event is primarily a journey and not a training session. If some of the group do not feel able to paddle as far as 4 miles, there will be an option for some of the group to make a shorter journey by turning round and starting back before reaching Lochrin Basin. Please note that the meeting point is at the Edinburgh Kayak Club boat shed and not at the canal.

Location: EKC boat shed. Shed is beside pond next to main entrance of Craiglochart Leisure and Tennis Centre, 177 Colinton Road, Edinburgh, EH14 1BZ.

Participation Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced

Date/Time: 30th May 2018. Meet at EKC boat shed at 18.00hrs. Activity may last up to 4 hours (until 22.00hrs) taking into account the time needed for completing forms, loading up boats and getting to the canal and getting back to boat shed and unloaded afterwards.

Additional Info: We will endeavour to accommodate those with disabilities but safety is our priority and we may have to refuse individuals if we feel we cannot safely accommodate their needs. All under 18s must have a signed parental consent form and all under 16s must have a parent or guardian with them at all times.
