The last two months have seen Scottish athletes competing in selection races for places on the GB team for the upcoming season.
There have been fantastic performances by many athletes, with grit, determination and sportsmanship being shown across the board.
The first selection races were the Junior & U23 series, held at Holme Pierrepont & Lee Valley whitewater courses. From this series there have been selections to the Junior/U23 World and European Championships for Lois Leaver (K1), Ailsa Gourlay (C1), Sophie Ogilvie (C1 & K1) and Peter Linksted (C1) as well as selection for Duncan Edwards (K1) to the U23 European Championships. A massive congratulations to these athletes and also to those who gave it a shot this year but did not make the team this time around.
In Sprint, individual and crewboat selections were held at Holme Pierrepont regatta course at the end of March and April. These trials were contested in some extremely challenging conditions. Particularly for Alexandra Armstrong & Skye Cadell who had to repeat their selection race in the K4 500m after the initial race result was annulled due to extreme weather conditions. They rose to the challenge and won a strongly contested race for the second time the following day. Following the selection series, 3 performance squad athletes have made the Junior GB team with Alexandra Armstrong and Skye Cadell selected in the K4 500m for the Brandenburg International, as well as the Junior World and European Championships, and Olympic Hopes Regatta. Jack Brockway's performance in an extremely competitive K2 1000m saw him selected for the Brandenburg International. In the U16 category, Aida Shaikh Ali and Hannah Clarkson battled through the conditions to win selection to the Brandenburg International. Four athletes have been selected for U23 World & European Championships with Ieuan James & Deborah Kerr selected in the K1 200m events as well as Rachael Kneen (K4 500m) and Lydia Dowling-Clarke (C2 500m) making their debuts at U23 level in their respective crewboats.
All athletes worked well together over the racing weekends and many strong performances were put in. There will be further selection races for U17 & U18 at the end of June where athletes will compete for the final places available at the Olympic hopes Regatta.
The last Slalom selection races of the year were the Senior selections which was held at Lee Valley over the Easter bank holiday weekend. This series involved three races of an extremely high standard as it formed the first part of selection for the Tokyo Olympics. Several Scottish Performance Squad athletes competed against older and more experienced competition. They put in some great performances and will have left the weekend having learnt a lot about performance at the top of the sport.
The senior selection races in Slalom & Sprint saw numerous selections for Scottish athletes. Congratulations, we look forward to following your performances over the season.
