River Spey: Access Works at the Old Bridge Inn

Aug 29, 2019
The Spey Catchment Initiative in partnership with Aviemore Community Enhancement Company is progressing a project to stabilise eroding banks and improve the access point to the Spey at the Old Bridge Inn at Aviemore. Works are provisionally scheduled for the two week period 23rd Sept to 4th October. The dates may be subject to change nearer the time according to weather and river flow levels.

The access ramp area and adjacent banks will need to be temporarily fenced off, and the site set up will also require some space in the adjacent area, which means that access to the river for canoeists, kayakers and other recreational users will be affected. However, disruption will be kept to a minimum whilst ensuring public safety.

The rate of environmental deterioration at this popular location has accelerated in recent years and we are keen to act now to prevent further damage and ensure the area remains safe, stable, pleasant and attractive to all users. Low terraces will be formed on either side of the access ramp using natural larch timbers and growing willow to stabilise the sandy banks and stop further erosion. The ramp to the river will be reinforced and the area made resilient to recreational pressures and flooding without intrusive hard engineering. The site will remain fully accessible for launching canoes and kayaks, and for leisure use by the public and Old Bridge Inn clientele, all of whom we hope will benefit from the improvements.
